Vadodara: The city's Maharaja Sayajirao (MS) University has launched a website to enable senior citizens find jobs, engage in voluntary work and even find live-in partners. The project is the brainchild of Department of Extension and Communication of Faculty of Family and Community Sciences.

Ever since the website's launch on December 2, it has been receiving good response from various parts of the country including Chennai, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad, and even USA, said Prof Maniar Avni, who is closely associated with the portal. "Several agencies approached us for its franchise, but we refused since it is an academic venture and we do not intend to turn it into a commercial venture."

"The idea was conceived after I completed my research on 'Television and Elderly People' for which M S University awarded PhD degree to me in 2006," Maniar said. Loneliness in life of most of the senior citizens was the main reason behind launching www.2ndinnings.in, she said.

Elderly Gujaratis seeking partners for live-in relationship can just log on to the first-of-its-kind website that has uploaded profiles of men and women. It also provides information on suitable jobs and voluntary work for the elderly people, she said. The website has been prepared by two students, Prarthana Vaidya and Khyati Gohil, who are doing PhD under Maniar.
