CHENNAI: Five persons, including a six-year-old boy, were killed in three separate accidents in the city on Friday.A 55-year-old woman, Chinna Ponnu of Avadi and her grandson Saravanan (6), a class one student, were killed when a two-wheeler hit them while they were crossing the road on the Avadi-Poonamallee Highway. Chinna Ponnu died on the spot, while her grandson succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital. The woman was returning home after picking her grandson from school when the accident took place.In another accident near Adyar, a software engineer of Nandambakkam, Ashok Kumar (31) of Gunidy died after his vehicle rammed into the median, police said. He was returning after meeting his friend at Mylapore.Two employees, Jothy (29) of Korukkupet and Shankar (29) of Kumbakonam, of a private bank at Semmenchery, were on their way to meet a client on a two-wheeler when a car hit their vehicle from behind at Kandanchavadi. They were killed on the spot. Police registered a case and are investigating.Three Arrested forRobbing WomanThree persons were arrested on Saturday for robbing a woman in Kotturpuram. Vignesh (24) of Madurai and Mayan (24) of Ramanathapuram district visited the house of Saraladevi (52) in Kotturpuram under the pretext of looking for a house on rent. After entering the house, they tied up Saraladevi and threatened her at knifepoint. They stole 18 sovereigns of gold jewellery worth `3.50 lakh.After arrest, the duo confessed that they had acted upon the advise of Anand, an employee with a local cable television operator in Kotturpuram. Anand, who was the brother-in-law of Vignesh,  wanted to get his sister married and needed gold jewellery. He had asked Vignesh and Mayan to rob Saraladevi, after he found that she lived alone and survived off the money she received from renting out her house, the police said. Based on their confession, police arrested Anand alias Vivekanandan (26) of Tuticorin district. Police also seized Anand’s two-wheeler that was used during the robbery and recovered the gold jewellery.
