Five new roads leading to Gairsain will be constructed to increase motor connectivity to the remote hill town, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat said on Wednesday.
The five new roads will connect Gairsain with Ramnagar, Bageshwar, Ranikhet, Pauri and Tehri, Rawat told a press conference soon after the conclusion of the three-day session of the state assembly. Increased motor connectivity to the hill town will boost development activities in the area, he said.
The state government held an assembly session for the first time outside Dehradun at Gairsain to express its concern for people living in the hills. Located in the middle of Kumaon and Garhwal regions, Gairsain is an emotive issue for statehood movement spearhead Uttarakhand Kranti Dal which is in favour of the state having its permanent capital in hills.
Accusing BJP members of non-cooperation, Rawat said the government was to bring a resolution in the state assembly on Gairsain but it could not happen as the opposition party created a ruckus in the House.
Noting that the pandemonium created by the opposition was unwarranted, he said the change in the state's excise policy was meant to benefit fruit growers by finding them a market for their produce, 50 per cent of which is destroyed every year.
