Hockey Olympian Jaman Lal Sharma passed away in Lucknow on Saturday.

Lucknow: Hockey Olympian Jaman Lal Sharma passed away at a local hospital on Saturday. He was 84.

Sharma was admitted to the hospital last night after suffering a brain hemorrahage.

Sharma was a defender of repute and was part of the silver winning Indian hockey team in the Rome Olympics in 1960 and was also the coach of the country's hockey team on many occasions.

He also held the post of Director, Sports, in the state and was actively involved in promoting hockey by training youngsters.

For his contribution for the game, Sharma was awarded the Padamshree.

A number of sports organisations condoled the death of Sharma.
