The Pulimoodu Residents’ Association had risen to the occasion on the Gandhi Jayanthi day. With the permission of the authorities of Sri Dhanwantari Matam Ayurvedics Pvt Ltd, the Association members opened the gates of the Gandhi memorial at Pulimoodu, which was in a totally neglected state. They cleaned up the premises filled with garbage piles and even empty alcohol bottles.
The memorial, unveiled by then Opposition leader A K Antony on January 17, 2000, was constructed in memory of Gandhiji’s visit to the place. During the freedom struggle, there was a free tailoring coaching unit for Harijans run by freedom fighter Jubba Ramakrishna Pillai. Gandhiji visited the place in 1937.
Express in these columns reported about the neglected state of the memorial on Tuesday, which prompted the Residents’ Association members to clean up the area. Led by Association patron Dr T P Sankarankutty Nair, the members garlanded the bust of Gandhiji and organised a memorial meet.
According to the Association members, the government should declare it as a heritage site immediately as the land of defunct quality control lab of Sri Dhanwantari Matam Ayurvedics Pvt Ltd was reportedly sold for the construction of a flat. “Also, the Ambujavilasam-Vanchiyoor road is ready for development. The government should purchase the 2 cents of land and declare it as a heritage site,” Sankarankutty Nair said.
