CHENNAI: Give him credit for his impressive physique or utterly malleable image of being the no-fuss god, Lord Ganesha rules the roost at the Kolu exhibition which kick-started at Poompuhar on Wednesday. Marble dolls of the elephant-headed god striking different poses such as wielding a laptop or holding a stethoscope are likely to be a big draw at this 20-day festival. Even as the city braces itself for the colourful Kolu festival lasting nine days starting September 28, Poompuhar has sourced dolls worth `2 crores from West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Maharastra and Rajasthan, apart from having stalls of local artisans for the season. “We are expecting to see a sale of at least `50 lakh during the Kolu festival this year,” said A Kamala, manager of Poompuhar, a unit of the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation.A set of 15 dolls of Indian women from different states costing `4,000 (prices before discount), a 60th wedding scene costing `1,100, a Mysore Dussehra scene set of 25 dolls costing `2,500, Terracota Krishnas with gopikas priced at `400, a `9000-worth Dasavatharam set in Kondapalli wood measuring nearly a foot each are some of the new arrivals at the store this Navrathiri season. Also new is the entire Krishna set, featuring the five phases of his life, costing `3,500. All dolls at the exhibition will be sold at a 10 percent discount. The Ganesha theme of marble dolls features the god with his favoured mount- the rat- in different poses, such as the duo playing on a see-saw (`2,500), trying a game of chess (`1,800), Ganesha listening to the rat read from a book (`1860), the god playing doctor to the rat (`2950). A set of three Ganeshas playing a piano, violin and drum each costing `2,500, a Ganesha cuddling a rat that is lying on his master’s knees (`1,800), and a set of five Ganeshas on a plantain leaf playing different instruments (`4,000) are some of the other dolls at the exhibition. The expo will be held from 10 am to 8 pm till October 4.
