New Delhi: An application was moved before the Supreme Court on Saturday seeking a direction to Government to take immediate steps for extradition of Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi from Argentina where he has been detained.
The application which was filed by advocate Ajay Agarwal, has sought direction to the CBI to submit status report on the steps taken for Bofors accused, Quattrocchi's extradition.
The Italian businessman, wanted in the Bofors case for the last 14 years, was detained and taken in preventive custody on February 6 at Iguazu airport while in transit to Buenos Aires.
Earlier Agarwal had filed a petition on February 12, demanding that the CBI make attempts to recover Quattrocchi's de-frozen money and that the Italian be produced in court.
But the CBI had told Supreme Court earlier this month that it did not know about Ottavio Quattrocchi's whereabouts even though he had been detained on February 6.
Agarwal’s application said that CBI had the information that Quattrocchi was held in Argentina since February 8 but it maintained a judicious silence even when a matter relating to him was heard before the apex Court on February 12.
When asked if he was suggesting with his fresh PIL that the CBI on February 12 lied in court, Agarwal said, “In fact when the letter was taken up on February 12, that time I had moved an application for the retrieval of the amount which was released to Quattrocchi because of the facilities from the CBI. And also to secure the presence of Quattrocchi before the trial court within four weeks and the SC had issued notice on that.”
“There is no question of lying but it has concealed a material fact before the court and it amounts to the contempt of court. I have moved the application praying that the direction should be given to the Supreme Court, Central Government as well as ministry of external affairs to take immediate steps,” he added.
