CHENNAI: Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa on Friday appealed to the voters of the Sankarankoil Assembly constituency to elect her party candidate S Muthuselvi in the March 18 by-election with a thumping margin while defeating all other candidates to the extent that they lose their deposits. The Chief Minister made this appeal to the voters a couple of hours before the campaign for the by-election to Sankarankoil constituency came to end on Friday. The AIADMK general secretary said the previous DMK regime had evolved schemes keeping the interests of their family in mind and acted against the very principle of democracy. After the AIADMK assumed power, her government has been formulating schemes with the sole objective of public welfare. The schemes being implemented by the government include distribution of free rice to all family card-holders, comprehensive insurance scheme for life-saving treatments, hike in the pension for the elderly, Arasu cable TV connections at a nominal charge, free laptops to students, distribution of mixers, grinders, fans to women, goats and milch cows to needy families etc.The government has been taking stringent action against land-grabbers and the land recovered has been handed over to their original owners.Jayalalithaa said in appreciation of the welfare schemes of her government, the people of Tamil Nadu have extended an overwhelming mandate for the AIADMK in the elections to the local bodies. The AIADMK supremo said party candidate Muthuselvi was a well-known public worker in Sankarankoil constituency and also a down-to-earth person just like the late Minister S Karuppasamy, who represented this constituency. While Muthuselvi would work for fulfilling the demands of the public, the DMK candidate has been accused of land-grabbing. The voters of the Sankarankoil constituency should ponder over these facts and elect Muthuselvi as their representative with a thumping margin, Jayalalithaa appealed.
