Guwahati: Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi was on Saturday unanimously re-elected the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and will be sworn in on tomorrow as the state's new leader.
The new Congress MLAs declared Gogoi as their leader at a meeting on Saturday attended by Digvijay Singh, AICC leader in charge of Assam, and Congress observers Mohsina Kidwai and Chandan Bagchi.
The meeting decided to give three ministerial berths to alliance partner Bodoland People's Progressive Front (Hagrama) in the Congress-led coalition ministry.
Gogoi then drove to the Raj Bhawan to stake claim to form the next government. He was accompanied by Hagrama Basumatary, chief of the Bodoland Peoples' Progressive Front (Hagrama), which has pledged support to the Congress.
Governor Lt Gen Ajay Sinha was given a list of 63 MLAs–52 of Congress and 11 BPPF –and nine MLAs who have promised to support Gogoi
The Governor invited Gogoi to form the next government. The Congress-led-alliance now has 64 MLAs. Nine independents, including three Congress rebels, will support the new government.
The AUDF, a rival of the Congress till the results were out, has offered support along with the NCP. The AUDF has 10 MLAs and NCP has a lone MLA.
The swearing-in will take place on Wednesday Mr Gogoi returns from New Delhi. He is leaving today to meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi to finalise the list of ministers to be included in the Cabinet.
