The attack in Dinanagar in Gurdaspur district of the Punjab is the first major terror attack in the state in over a decade. The Punjab had witnessed a turbulent phase in the 1980s and 90s when Khalistani terror groups backed by Pakistan spread mayhem in the state and other regions of India killing thousands of innocent people.
But since 2003 there has been hardly any terror related incident of significance. Even the local support for Khalistani terror groups has declined to a large extent.
According to South Asia terrorism Portal (SATP), which maintains a database of terror related attacks in South Asia including India, there were no terror attacks in 2003 and since then the Punjab has been very peaceful.
