The Karnataka Cyber Crime sleuths have traced the IP address of the criminal group that hacked Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar’s personal website 15 days back to Pakistan.
However, Bangalorebased private global cyber crime tracking firm Cyber Security Response Team (CSRT) said the police could be on the wrong track.
“Our initial investigations have shown that the IP address was a proxy. Often criminals who don’t want to be tracked down protect their original IP address by giving out a proxy IP. Criminals create very realistic sites that aim at collecting personal information and this is what the Black Hat Hackers- Skywalkers have done,” said Shubha Sunil, founder chairperson of the CSRT. She said the same group hacked various government and private websites earlier.
“They have been working in groups. Some members of this group were also involved in the hacking of Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, BJP and Congress websites in the past, though Anonymous was the main group behind the cyber attacks,” she added.
“Over 289 government websites have been hacked by cyber criminals between January and August this year as per our survey. A malware can be installed in user’s system just during a visit to a compromised website, and it will then compromise the computer and the privacy of the content available on the site,” she said.
Shubha Sunil further said, “Even though the website is restored in five minutes after it is compromised, the malware could still affect any user who open the website during the attack.”
M Praveen Kumar, Managing Director, Squadm Technologies (the company that manages the chief minister’s website), said: “The website, www.jagadishsettar.com, was launched on September 29, 2010, and the hacker placed words in Urdu, and the name (of the group) and purpose in English.
The content placed on the website read: ‘I am ready to give my blood to my nation. I am a Pakistani, I want peace and freedom.’ There were also other messages in Urdu.”
