CHENNAI: Chithralaya Gopu, who gave Tamil cinema evergreen comedies such as Kadhalikka Neramillai, Galatta Kalyanam and Utharavindri Ullae Va, celebrated his 80th birthday here on June 30. A sathabhishekam was held to mark the occasion. The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, J Jayalalithaa, felicitated the writer-director in a letter, wishing him “many more happy and healthy years.” Members of the film fraternity attended the function and wished him. Those present at the sathabhishekam were actors Sivakumar, Kamal Haasan and Saroja Devi. Also present on the occasion were Cho, lyricist Vaali, director CV Rajendran, Santhana Barathi, Gemini Ganesan’s daughter Kamala Ganesan and writer Indira Soundarajan. Gopu has written nearly 60 films, and directed 27 of them. These include Kaasethaan Kadavulada and Athaiya Maamiya among others.
