BANGALORE: Every day brings in new interactions of some kind or the other; it may be in the form of a discussion, reading of an article, conversation with individuals, or watching a movie. Have you ever wondered why certain learning interactions are more superior and effective than the others? Studying the nature of the learning material and the processes involved provides insight. The use of interactive and critical thinking questions engages the learner in the ‘learning process’ and transforms him or her from a passive to an active learner. Very often, there is a common misconception that students are argumentative when they ask questions during lessons. However, we fail to see beyond what meets the eye.The brain is triggered off with thoughts associated with the subject of discussion and shows the reflex reaction of a keen learner. This can be dangerous if misinterpreted and lead to hostile behavior/ conflict between the presenter and the student, leading to labeling of the individual and curtailing their spontaneous reaction. On the other hand, if the thread of discussion is picked up and continued, it can lead to effective steps in the learning process.Does it capture the interest of the learner through the use of formats like poetry, humor, song? Is the learning environment safe? Does it arouse curiosity or excitement? Does it provide stimulus to the sense organs by targeting various learning styles/modalities? Cross curricular integrated learning examples would form the basis of using this method. The methodology adopted must be worth investing time in quality learning. It should also be able to stir the latent talents amongst learners and direct it in the right path.
