London: Hollywood bosses are cutting on the pay packets of A-list film stars after deciding that they’re just not worth it.
According to the chiefs, blockbuster hits no longer depend on the star draw of names like George Clooney and Tom Cruise.
And the latest evidence of this is Clooney’s latest flop Leatherheads, which failed to recoup his and co-star Renée Zellweger’s megabucks salaries.
And studios were horrified that The Invasion, starring A-listers Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, took just 7million pounds at the box office after costing 40million pounds to produce.
Even bankable comedy stars like Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy and Will Ferrell have been misfiring.
Instead, comedies like Knocked Up, Superbad and Juno, starring unknowns like Ellen Page and Michael Cera, have attracted huge audiences.
Until recently, stars like Cruise, Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks could demand an upfront fee of around 12million pounds per picture as well as a huge slice of the profits.
But one agent said those days are coming to an end.
“The studios are finally waking up to the fact that great films can be sold on their own merit,” The Daily Star quoted the agent, as saying.
