Shimla: Himachal Pradesh government on Wednesday said it would consider amending the Indian Penal Code to make female foeticide a crime equivalent to murder and will pay Rs 10,000 to those who give the state information about this crime in the state.
Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh made this announcement during a seminar on female foeticide and the role of NGOs organised by state social board.
"All those who indulge in this heinous act and who conduct it are equally responsible for this crime," he said, adding the latest available figures in the state shows decline in female foeticide which is a good sign.
He said, the state government had also decided to give Rs 5 lakh as incentive for development works to those panchayats where the female birth would be more than boys.
He also announced that his government has decided to reward Rs 25,000 to the those families which would adopt family planning after the birth of first female child and to those who adopt it after the birth of two female child.
