Hyderabad Police keeps tab on people getting drawn towards ISIS via social media
In September, Hyderabad Police foiled the plan of an ex-Google employee who decided to travel to Iraq to join the terror group.

Hyderabad: While India may not have joined the US-led coalition against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) but security agencies were keeping a close track of Indians who may be getting drawn towards the group via social media.

The situation was alarming as more educated young people seem to be falling prey. In September, Hyderabad Police foiled the plan of an ex-Google employee who decided to travel to Iraq to join the terror group. The software professional was not arrested but is being monitored.

Hyderabad Police has been keeping a close eye on all people who are visiting websites propagating ISIS and are even counseling young men whose online activities seem suspicious.

Police Commissioner Mahender Reddy said, "There is a lot of activity on social media. With the help of parents, we counsel such young people who are misled. We appeal parents to be watchful of children activity online."

Hyderabad seemed to be emerging as a hub for Islamic terrorism. In October, two suspected SIMI operatives from Maharashtra were arrested by the Hyderabad Police.

They were allegedly planning to go to Afghanistan to get training from al-Qaeda. Both operatives used social media to express their extremist beliefs. Police seized a bomb making manual and a 16 GB pen drive containing extremist literature.

Reddy said, "They were also using social media. We don't know how many more with them. Literature was seized from them."

Security agencies have already warned plans of terror groups trying to recruit Indian youth online. Educated young people getting influenced by Islamic State propaganda on social media is the major cause of worry for police.
