CHENNAI: Officers of the erstwhile International Airports Authority of India (IAAI) have threatened to begin a relay-hunger strike from New Year’s Day if their demands are not met. Speaking after a massive stir by this section of the unified Airports Authority of India (AAI) at the Chennai Airport on Tuesday, IAAI Officers’ Association president SKS Murthi said that all 230 officers would defer from work and stage a relay-hunger stir if their demand for equal seniority was not met by January 1. Inspired by the impact of Team Anna’s hunger-strike, the airport officers feel that it might yield results in their 17-year struggle. “After the IAAI and the National Airports Authority of India (NAAI) were merged in 1994 into AAI, we were not accorded seniority or promotions on a common cadre basis,” charged Murthi. “Now, with the AAI strapped for funds, we are still at the receiving end,” he said and added that similar protests would be held in Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and other major airports. “We have already ensured that our officers strictly stick to their 9.30 am to 5.30 pm work deadline and have stopped weekend work. So, we are confident of action after this,” he concluded.
