The Bangalore Division of South Western Railway (SWR) operated two special trains to Guwahati from Bangalore on Wednesday night owing to the sudden rush of people from Northeast heading back home.
Divisional Railway Manager Agarwal told Express that while the first special train left Bangalore at 11 pm, the second train left at 11.30 pm. As many as 6,000 tickets were sold across the counters on Wednesday alone. This forced railways to operate two special trains to Guwahati.
“Even we were surprised to see a large number of students coming to Railway Station to buy tickets to get back to their home town. So, we decided to run two special trains to Guwahathi. The first special train had 20 coaches and the second train 18. Additional staff were put on the job to issue tickets to North-Eastern students,” he explained.
However, Agarwal categorically stated that railway will not operate any special train on Thursday.
