New Delhi: The proposed 33 per cent quota for women in parliament and in state legislatures is something that the Prime Minister says he is “committed” to provide.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said on Thursday that the government is committed to introduce women’s reservation bill in parliament and in state legislatures as soon as consensus could be built on the issue.
"I remain committed to working toward building broad based consensus (on the issue) and table the bill (on reserving one-third seats for women) as soon as possible," he said in the Rajya Sabha.
The statement came as members cut across party lines to fervently urge that the bill, pending for over a decade, be tabled during the ongoing budget session of parliament.
Chairperson Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, keeping in mind that Thursday was being observed as International Women's Day, suspended question hour for 30 minutes to enable MPs to speak on the quota bill.
