Senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Ram Naik was on Monday appointed as Governor of Uttar Pradesh. Sources in the BJP say that the Centre reportedly cleared Naik's name in a late night development.
"I'm happy that whatever I've done so far, the leaders have recognised it now. I was doing politics and social work till now. I've a close relation with Mumbai, many UP people are also working here. I will be in UP for next five years. I'm happy about it," said Naik.
80-year-old Naik was born in Atpadi, in Sangli district of Maharashtra, in a middle class deshastha family. He is a commerce and law graduate.
He got married on May 17, 1960 to Kunda Naik and has 2 daughters.
Naik was part of the central cabinet during the NDA rule and held the Oil and Natural Gas portfolio. He is instrumental in introducing Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme. He is known as a true railway commuters activist. Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation was formed when he was Minister of State for Railways.
He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was a member of the 13th Lok Sabha (1999–2004).
He was the BJP candidate for elections to the 14th Lok Sabha representing Mumbai North, but lost to famous Bollywood actor Govinda, a INC candidate from Virar.
Ram Naik announced in September 2013 that he will not contest the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
