The Indian Police Service (IPS) versus Indian Revenue Service (IRS), often called the clash of the cadres, will now be seen in the Centre Bureau of Investigation (CBI) too.
In a first, the CBI will be getting five officers from the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) cadre to be deployed at the Superintendent of Police (SP) level, said top government sources.
“The CBI usually gets staff from the IPS or original cadre of the CBI recruited at Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) level or rankers,” said sources, adding, “The change is to make the CBI able to handle cases of economic offences.”
These officials are from 2014-2016 batches of the IRS.
The move, however, has upset the IPS lobby. “For them, a CBI posting was good exposure at the initial level. The IRS appointments and deputation will reduce the number of vacancies,” said sources.
The government, meanwhile, wants to have the best hands in the top agencies, irrespective of the service, given the rise in economic offences. “IRS officers handle economic offences in the best way, which the premier agency, too, can pick up. Moreover, the experience will help the IRS officers after the deputation, too,” sources said.
The IPS lobby is seeking this as a major setback as they hardly have any role in the Enforcement Directorate. They also wanted their cadre officers in the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO), which, too, has been denied to them.
