HYDERABAD: An adverse preliminary report by the CBI on the alleged disproportionate assets amassed by senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer M Anil Kumar has led to his suspension. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), which functions under the Union Finance Ministry, recently issued orders placing Anil Kumar under suspension following receipt of the report. Top sources told Express that after a raid carried out by a CBI team from Visakhapatnam on the residence and office of Anil Kumar, a 1990 batch IRS officer, in Hyderabad and Vijayawada, the agency prepared a detailed report on his assets.
Anil Kumar was posted as additional commissioner, Income Tax, Guntur range, when the CBI raided him on June 23. He will remain under suspension for three months after which CBDT will review his suspension based on the inputs provided by CBI. Sources said that in the report submitted to CBDT, CBI officials said reported that they had found about `75 lakh in cash, nearly 7 kg of gold and about 50 kg of silver belonging to the officer. The report further said the officer owned about six houses in Chennai, two in Hyderabad and one in Vijayawada. The property documents were found in his bank lockers. The market value could go beyond `25 crore, officials said.

Sources said Anil Kumar reportedly acquired this wealth between 2001 and 2007. Though the CBI report had sought his transfer to a nonsensitive post. CBDT directly placed him under suspension.
