KOZHIKODE: Terming the recent controversy regarding the appointment of vice-chancellor in the Calicut University disgraceful, noted historian and scholar M G S Narayanan has said that the incident revealed the decadence occured in the Indian Union Muslim League over the years. He was speaking at a debate organised by the BJP on ‘The appointment of vice-chancellor in the Calicut University and communalisation of educational sector’, here on Monday.“The quality chart of the vice-chancellors appointed in the Calicut University since its inception shows a downward trend. To my experience and knowledge, M M Ghani, the first vice-chancellor of the university, was the most able person and he was appointed by the Muslim League. The present recommendation made by the same political party without considering qualifications shows the decadence occurred to it and it can be termed disgraceful,” he said.MGS added that the selection for the post of vice-chancellor should be based merely on qualifications. Political and communal aspects should not be considered. “It would be better if teachers of a university could elect the best academic as the vice-chancellor from among them,” he said.Terming the communalisation and politicisation of educational sector ‘unfortunate’, former MP Sebastian Paul stressed the need for evolving a new system to appoint vice-chancellors in universities and adoption of procedures followed by various foreign universities in this regard. “It’s unfortunate that ministers of certain constituent parties of the ruling front are given a free hand to appoint vice-chancellors, terming it as compulsions of coalition politics. Such practises have shrunk the universities in the state to mere degree-giving institutions,” he said. The former MP added that the Education department should be handled by mainstream political parties, which possess more national and secular outlook, as any serious flaw in the education system can affect generations.
