Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Sunday announced a slew of measures to benefit students from BC, MBC, denotified and minority communities. She also announced a hike in assistance and grants for Muslim women’s self-help groups (SHGs).
In a bid to boost their shot at employment opportunities, the Chief Minister also announced the provision for spoken English training of 6,710 students. Of this, 160 students are currently enrolled in government hostels for BC, MBC and denotified communities and 6,550 students study in minority institutions.
At `2,800 per student, the training programme would cost Rs 1.83 crore. Further, Jayalalithaa also allocated `3.71 crore towards the purchase of 4,204 steel and 50 wooden bunk beds for students currently boarding at 108 BC, MBC and denotified hostels across the State.
She also ordered the doubling of the prize money given by the State to minority community toppers in Class X and XII exams.
The government has also been ordered to give Muslim women’s SHGs twice the amount they had collected in donations. The CM also made sure the grant paid to them was doubled to `20 lakh. This would be taken into effect from April 1, 2012.
