New Delhi: Paying glowing tributes to late JMM MP Sunil Mahto who was gunned down by Maoist rebels, members of the Jharkhand Assembly on Tuesday unanimously expressed their determination to work effectively to end Naxalism.

"I deplore in strongest terms the barbaric attack on Mahato, who was frank, brave and sympathetic towards the peoples' cause," Jharkhand Chief Minister Madhu Koda was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.

Other members of the Jharkhand Assembly including Deputy Chief Minister Stephen Marandi, Health Minister Bhanu Pratap Sahi, RJD legislature party leader Anapurna Devi and Leader of Opposition Arjun Munda condemned the attack, saying that a permanent solution to Naxalism was the need of the hour.

Jharkhand government has ordered a CBI probe into the murder. The government hopes that a way can be worked out with which the growing brazenness of the Naxalites can be effectively contained.

The General Secretary of JMM and MP Sunil Mahato was shot dead by Naxals in Ghatshila near Jamshedpur on Sunday, when he had come to watch a football match at Bakuria.

Ghatshila Sub Divisional Officer Ramesh Dubey said that about 15 Naxals came to the venue of the match ten minutes before it ended and moved near Mahato on the pretext of garlanding him before opening fire on him and his guards from point blank range.

Deputy Chief Minister Stephen Marandi apprehended a conspiracy angle to the murder, saying it appeared that the killers had hatched it.

"The spontaneous response to Monday's bandh reflects the sentiment of the people," Marandi told PTI.

Health Minister Bhanu Pratap Sahi said steps should be taken to punish the killers and to prevent such incidents.

Former minister and JD-U president Jaleswar Mahto appealed to the legislators to rise above party politics and accept the impending challenge to curb extremism.
