Kangana Ranaut, Rani Mukerji, Priyanka Chopra: Actresses who stole the show in 2014
Take a look at stars who left everyone talking about their performances in 2014.

It is the manner in which they infuse life into scripted characters that makes actors truly great. The year 2014 saw many heroines imitating characters and emotions, but only a few left an impact by bringing dialogues alive, by playing characters in the real way, and not ending up being a caricature, and by finding huge success by being versatile in their skills and craft.

Take a look at stars who left everyone talking about their performances in 2014.

Kangana Ranaut: To call Kangana Ranaut a "versatile" actor is an understatement because she has played more varied roles than most of her contemporaries. She flawlessly played a sweet and amusing and depressing and confident girl in 'Queen' this year. If the viewers adored and instantly fell in love with the film, it was all because of Kangana's ability to show the emotional spectrum with great ease. And if 'Queen' was about West Delhi girl Kangana trying to find her real self, 'Revolver Rani' featured the actress in a completely different avatar. The film, which was quite clearly inspired by 'Kill Bill', showed her as a feisty dacoit Alka Singh, who had no qualms in talking about her sexual urges.

Madhuri Dixit: Agreed, there is no dearth of natural actresses in Bollywood. But what Madhuri did in 'Dedh Ishqiya' was pure magic. Her character in 'Dedh Ishqiya' is made to be charming, and the way she captured the essence of her character Begum Para is exceptional. From playing the vulnerable widow who organizes a 'shayari' competition at her palace to being a reliable friend to Muniya (Huma Qureshi), she gives a heartfelt performance. The manner in which she incorporates modifications in her tone is flawless. So while Madhuri wowed us in 'Dedh Ishqiya' for the grace with which she performed her classical dance moves, her heroic act in 'Gulaab Gang' was ideal. She was terrific as she performed her stunt sequences and lead a group of women who wore pink saris, carried lathis, axes to take on the thugs.

Priyanka Chopra: She may have made headlines for winning a prestigious beauty pageant, but over the years she has proved she isn't in the industry solely because of her looks. She is a fan favorite, a global icon and of course, a truly great actor. As Mary Kom she was convincing. Whether it was the accuracy with which she portrayed emotions and or the realism she showed in her struggles to become the five-time world champion, Priyanka stood out. She may not have looked exactly like Mary but the physical transformation that she underwent and the ease with which she hits boys, gives it back to sports officials and shoulder her responsibilities as a mother, she left an impact.

Vidya Balan: She was fabulous in 'Kahaani' and 'The Dirty Picture', but with 'Bobby Jasoos' Vidya Balan proved that nothing is supreme than having the potential to leave everyone in splits. With 'Bobby Jasoos', Vidya became everyone's favorite funny actress. Who would have thought that someone who played a geeky teenager in popular TV series 'Hum Paanch' will rule Bollywood and command the same importance that prominent actors enjoy? Each time you watch 'Bobby Jasoos', you laud Vidya for pulling off each disguise with perfection. From wearing minimal makeup to being dressed up as a beggar, and doing justice to her role as that of an old bearded maulvi, Vidya was convincing.

Tabu: After watching the number of rave reviews she earned for her role as Ghazala in 'Haider', many viewers were left thinking about the range of roles she has successfully played over the years. The film quite evidently belonged only to Tabu, who was strong even though she showed her vulnerability.

Rani Mukerji: Since 'Mardaani' was her comeback film, it had to be powerful. She cusses, barges into the room of goons to combat them, and does just about everything to bust a human-trafficking racket. Rani knew her character Shivani Shivaji Roy, a senior inspector - Crime Branch so well that no other actor could have pulled it off so convincingly.
