Bangalore: In response to the call given by the Bar Council of India, lawyers belonging to Karnataka State Bar Council will boycott courts on July 11 and 12 protesting against some new bills proposed to be introduced in the monsoon session of Parliament.
A member of the Bar Council of India, Bhoje Gowda told PTI, considering the impact of Higher Education Research Bill, 2011, the National Accreditation Regulatory Authority for Higher Education Institutions Bill 2010, Foreign Educational Institutions (Regulation of Entry and Operations) Bill, 2010 and the National Law Schools Bill, 2011, we are of the opinion that the said bills are an attempt to allow the entry of foreign institutions in the country".
Ultimately, the Indian culture, institutions, poor students, the Indian Bar and the future generations will be the sufferers, he said.
Gowda charged the HRD ministry of being bent upon weakening the lawyers' bodies and said the proposed bills were a "direct attempt to weaken the State Bar Councils".
He pointed out that the Constitution and the Advocates Act 1961, provides for their (lawyers') profession to be independent and entrusts them with the responsibility of laying down the norms standards of legal education in the country.
"To allow or not allow a foreign law college, thereby, is the privilege of the elected bodies of advocates under the Advocates Act and even this is being changed now", he said.
"Our demand is that unless there is a proper debate, no such bill drafted in an unscientific manner, is passed", Gowda said.
