Bangalore: Karnataka is contemplating a total ban on the sale of soft drinks in the state, with the government studying thelegal implications of such a move.

State Health Minister R K Ashok on Tuesday held discussions with Advocate General Uday Holla in this regard and said that the government was seeking legal opinion on imposing the ban.

Analysis of Thumps Up and Mirinda in a laboratory has testified that the drinks contained higher pesticide residues, he said. The government would soon be filing cases against the manufacturers of these brands.

Ashok said despite ban on sale of 11 brands of soft drinks including Coca Cola and Pepsi within the radius of 100 metres from schools and colleges, some shops continued to sell them and warned that ‘stringent action’ would be initiated against those who flout the directive.

The government has also banned sale of aerated soft drinks in hospitals.

Last week, the state government had filed a case against Coca Cola in a court here after its lab tests confirmed the presence of high levels of pesticides in its soft drinks.

It was the first state to file a case against the company after pesticide-in-the-cola controversy broke out.
