New Delhi: The central figure in Kerala’s anti-Coke struggle, Mayilamma, 70, passed away on Saturday night following psoriasis ailment.

Mayilamma, fondly called the tribal grandmother, began the community-led campaign in Plachimada district against Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd (HCCB) plant, the company that makes and bottles Coke in India, in April 22, 2002, which ultimately led to the closure of the factory in March 2004.

Mayilamma was supported by many national leaders, including Narmada Bachao Andolan leader Medha Patkar, in her fight against the over-exploitation of groundwater by the soft drink giant.

She had kept out of the struggle for the last two months because of differences with some samithi leaders and was undergoing treatment for psoriasis at a private hospital in Thrissur.

The tribal leader came into the limelight nationally as well as internationally following her involvement in the struggle.

She was also honoured with the Outlook Magazine's 'speak out' from United Progressive Alliance (UPA) chairperson Sonia Gandhi.

Mayilamma is survived by four sons.
