A dark unlit lane, a few stray dogs loitering at the street sides, not a soul in sight, but you still gather your courage, making your way through the deadly silence. Suddenly out of the pitch darkness a Maruti Omni screeches to a halt. Before your know you are pulled in by swift hands, tied up,.......
Now, this is a familiar scene in many a film, but the threat is real, and many of us at some point walking on a street have had vague thoughts of being ‘lifted’ by a van or car.
In an innovative project to counter such a possibility, a group of three B-Tech pass-outs from Kochi have come up with an easy, downloadable software on your mobile.
With a click of a button the software ‘Hello Kerala’ automatically locates the police station nearest to where you are standing and sends an sms to a mobile number at the police station. The sms will have details about the exact address of the point from which you pressed the button and a call for help. If by any chance, the mobile number does not work, the number will be immediately send to the cyber cell.
Talking about how the project came into being, Doney P Dev, CEO of the company, who developed it with his friends Rizwin Azeez Naina(TechLead) and Mahesh J Nair, says, “After passing out of college, we set up our own independent company, August Info Solutions.
It took us about four months to develop the software. The Beta version is already on the internet and people can download it for free from Google Play. In the last 17 days, the software has seen about 500 downloads. Once we get the feedback we would be developing a more advanced pro version.”
One of the key advantages of the software is that even though the system works on google maps and Global Positioning system, it can still work on phones without an internet connection.
But a key disadvantage is that the software can work only on Android phones.
But in the pro version, the software is to be developed for Blackberry and I Phones and also in phones with Windows Applications.
Apart from the emergency application, the software will also provide details about roads, railway station, airways, hotels, tourist destinations and upcoming events in the state.
