Kolkata rape: Custody of accused ends today
CM Mamata Banerjee had called the entire episode a part of an elaborate conspiracy against her government.

Kolkata: The police custody of the three men charged in the Park Street rape case ends on Saturday. The three are accused of raping a 37-year-old woman in a moving car on February 5.

In the immediate aftermath of the rape, the police had claimed that the accused had alibis. However, further investigations and two arrests later, the police confirmed rape and added that the accused had impersonated other people they knew.

The U-turn by the police, however, raised questions about the state government's role in the whole episode.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee went to the extent of calling the victim a part of an elaborate conspiracy against her government. A state minister had even questioned the morality of the victim.

The mother of two was allegedly raped at gunpoint inside a moving car in Kolkata. She managed to track down her rapists on social networking website Facebook and take snapshots of their photographs to file a complaint against them.

She claims she was offered a lift by four men, whom she befriended at a nightclub on February 5.

The case was cracked after the police recovered CCTV footage from outside Park Hotel which showed the victim getting inside the car with four men, as was originally claimed by the victim.

The police claimed that the four who had been identified "impersonated the names of the original suspects".
