Popular VJ and model Paloma Rao was truly speaking on every girl’s behalf when she announced that nobody would be able to turn down an offer to be pampered. And on Sunday, she truly walked the talk when she wallowed in every bit of the pampering that was extended to her as part of Fiama Di Wills’ Hair Masters, an expert-led interactive series. Stylist Jaishri Rao, who has the experience of styling popular film faces including Suriya, Gautami and Anita Ratnam, gave Paloma a hair wash and a cut, after which she styled it for her, as she constantly provided hair care tips. “Never get a hair style that will look good only at the salon and disappear after your first hair wash at home,” said Jaishri as the first piece of advice, before she moved on to simple hair care tips. “Never use scathing hot water, it tends to dry out the scalp and hair. Always use lukewarm water,” she explained. What people should pay attention to is the back of the head and the nape while shampooing, she instructed. “And never use your nails, even if you have the urge to scrub all the dirt off. It will heavily damage your hair roots,” warned Jaishri. ‘Shampooing one’s hair too often might result in hair breakage and loss’ is a big misunderstanding, Jaishri shot the myth down. “The idea is to keep hair clean. It doesn’t matter how many times a week you use shampoo, as long as it’s good quality,” she informed. Another myth that she tackled was that conditioning hair after shampooing leads to hair loss. As she massaged Paloma’s hair gently, she explained, “When you massage your hair with shampoo, the dead hair is loosened. This is what falls off when you condition your hair after shampooing.” Every girl in the audience subconsciously raised her hand to her hair to check for good measure when Jaishri added, “It is absolutely fine for a person to lose 50-150 strands of hair each day.” “Our hair is constantly exposed to pollution and dust. What happens when we leave oil on without washing it, is that all of these dirt particles and dust stick on,” she explained. Apart from washing off oil immediately, another solution that Jaishri provided was the use of serum instead of oil, which is also good to tackle frizz and breakage, but not without caution, “Never apply serum on your scalp. We sweat so much here and that can mix with the serum and make a mess.”
