Lucknow University to reopen today

Lucknow: The Lucknow University is scheduled to reopen on Thursday as the High Court has ordered the university to resume its academic session.

The university had been closed sine die since December 2006, due to violence during student union elections.

The court asked the district administration and university officials to cooperate with each other for resumption of normal classes on the campus.

Earlier, the institute’s Vice-Chancellor R P Singh had said that the Lucknow University is a hub of crime where narcotics, arms and prostitution rackets thrive.

He had told the Allahabad High Court that students accused of crime and rowdies ruled the university and had requested the Court to direct the Uttar Pradesh government to increase security on the campus and speed up pending criminal cases against students.

"In the employees' quarters and hostels, around 300 people are living illegally. They have been here for long and their number is increasing," Singh had told CNN-IBN.
