MADURAI: The Madurai City Corporation passed a resolution here on Wednesday to retrieve a portion of the corporation building, which functions as the office of Union Chemicals and Fertilizer Minister M K Alagiri.Madurai Corporation Mayor V V Rajan Chellappa passed the resolution in the council meeting with the councillors welcoming it. Justifying the retrieval of the building as a move to meet the demands of the expanded corporation, the Mayor said that the MP’s office has not been functioning since October 2009.An area of about 2,000 sqft of the IV Zonal office of the Madurai Corporation was allotted to Alagiri to run his MP office free-of-cost, after a corporation resolution in October 2009 during the previous DMK regime.The current resolution said that after the expansion of the Madurai Corporation areas, many localities have been annexed with Zone IV and they demand more space for local body employees to function and space for storing official records.After expansion, Ward 94 from Avaniyapuram, five wards from Tirupparankundram, Tirunagar, Harveypatti and Pudhukulam Block II Thayagarajanagar and three wards from South Zone have been brought under the IV Zonal office.Taking these into consideration, the Corporation passed the resolution.
