The President has also awarded 55 gallantry awards which include 12 Shaurya Chakras, 39 Sena Medal, 1 Nao Sena Medal and 2 Vayu Sena Medals.

New Delhi: On the occasion of the 68th Independence Day, President Pranab Mukherjee on Friday conferred the Ashok Chakra and various gallantry awards on defence personnel for their exceptional bravery.

Major Varadarajan (posthumous) of the 44th Battalion of the Rashtriya Rifles, who was killed in anti-terror operations in Jammu and Kashmir, has been awarded the Ashok Chakra, India's highest peace time gallantry award.

The officer was leading an anti-terrorist operation when his party came under fire from terrorists. He killed three Hizbul terrorists before he breathed his last.

The President has also awarded 55 gallantry awards which include 12 Shaurya Chakras, 39 Sena Medal, one Nao Sena Medal and two Vayu Sena Medals.
