Jempol: Malaysia is to graduate from 3G to 4G standards next year in its Internet broadband and cellular technology.

The upgrading will occur with huge investments from South Korean and Russian companies, the Minister of Information Communication and Culture, Dr Rais Yatim, said yesterday.

The change from 3G to 4G and LTE (Long Term Evolution) will enable video, audio and data to be combined for a comprehensive message, he told reporters after launching the Jempol Digital carnival.

"But the cell phones constructed for 3G that we have now will have to be replaced with new models that support 4G applications," he said.

The new technology would enable cell phones to receive TV programmes digitally and with the same clarity as a television set, Rais added.

A telecommunications expert said that the system that is better than 3G that some people use has been mistakenly called 4G.

It is actually 3.5G, which is not nearly as advanced as 4G, he said.

There are now cell phones which can receive TV programmes, but only in analogue form and the images are not clear, the expert said.
