Mandatory Switch to E-Bikes Causes Inconvenience: 31% Delhi Residents in LocalCircles Survey
The survey revealed that 44% of Delhi residents or their family/staff/business have used bike taxis once or more in 2022-23, with 31% of them saying that the switch over to electric bike taxis is causing inconvenience with fewer bikes available

At least 31% of Delhi residents feel inconvenienced by the mandatory switch to electric bikes, a LocalCircles survey has found.

The survey received over 10,000 responses from residents of Delhi. A total 69% respondents were men, while 31% respondents were women.

In November 2023, the Delhi Government issued a notification called the Delhi Motor Vehicle Aggregator and Delivery Service Provider Scheme 2023 under which only electric bike taxis will be allowed to ply in the national capital. The Central Government on January 22 issued an advisory notification to state governments allowing motorcycles to operate legally as contract carriages in India .

THE SURVEY

The survey asked Delhi residents: ‘Is the rule that all bike taxis must be electric causing any inconvenience to you, your family, staff and business?’

Of the 10,979 responses received, 31% stated “yes, it is causing inconvenience”; 13% stated “no, it is not causing any inconvenience as we are not using alternate transport”; while 56% stated the question is “not applicable” (I, family, staff or business do not use bike taxis).

The survey revealed that 44% of Delhi residents or their family/staff/business have used bike taxis once or more in 2022-23, with 31% of them saying that the switch over to electric bike taxis is causing inconvenience with fewer bikes available.

The survey was conducted via LocalCircles platform and all participants were validated citizens who had to be registered with LocalCircles to participate in this survey.
