Kathmandu: Maoists on Sunday lifted a highway blockade that had brought Nepal to a standstill for six days.

The blockade was called off just hours after reaching a new pact with political parties for fresh agitations against King Gyanendra's royal government.

Maoist leaders Prachanda and Baburam Bhattarai also suspended an indefinite general strike that was to begin on 3rd April. The blockade had cut traffic in highways connecting capital Kathmandu and led to soaring prices of essential goods and massive fuel shortages.

On Monday, militants ambushed an army patrol in central Nepal area, sparking a clash that killed at least 16 people, including 13 soldiers.

Packed buses and trucks loaded with supplies were again rolling across the country after the six-day disruption to commerce and transport across Nepal.

But even as the Maoists ended their siege of Capital Kathmandu and other towns after an appeal from the country's seven main political parties, they endorsed a new series of protests planned for early next month.
