THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The annual activities of the Science Facilitation Centre (SFC) at Mar Ivanios College, a science initiative founded by the Department of Physics, commenced on Monday. The programme is intended to promotescientific interest and creativity among school and college students. Shashi Tharoor MP lit the lamp marking the beginning of the sixth year activities of thecentre. Tharoor described the activities of SFC as extremely laudable and a great triumph for teachers and management of the college. Prof Dr K S Mathew, chief coordinator of SFC, welcomed the guests and the newly-enrolled students from various schools in Kerala. Dr K M Francis, principal of the college, presided over the function. He said that the NAAC peer team that visited the institution earlier this year was impressed by the activities of the SFC. Tharoor congratulated Yashwant R Kamath of Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan, Kodunganoor, for winning the ‘Science Genius Award - 2012’ and Vaishakh S Kumar, a third year Physics student at Mar Ivanios College, who was the recipient of the ‘Best teacher facilitator award - 2012.’ Rev Dr Samuel Mar Irenios, Auxiliary Bishop of Thiruvananthapuram, delivered the benedictory speech. D Charudathan - teacher facilitator, Yashwant R Kamath and Janaki M Omkumar, participants of SFC, shared their experiences of the programme. K Suresh Kumar and Balu Kariyath, film director-lyricist, felicitated. Fr Geevarghese Valiyachangaveettil, bursar of Mar Ivanios College, proposed the vote of thanks.
