Mayor gives away safety wears to sanitary workers

Mayor P Karthiyayini on Thursday, distributed gloves, jackets and facemasks to around 400 permanent sanitary workers of the Vellore Corporation.

“The initiative was taken in order to protect sanitary workers from infection while engaging in solid waste management activities,” the Mayor said. This had also been a long-time demand of the sanitary workers, who had been complaining often. The safety wears were purchased at a cost of  `2,65,000 from the Corporation General Fund. Karthiyayini said a resolution to distribute shoes to these workers would be passed in the next council meeting and action would be taken for the same.

Mayor Karthiyayini said talks were on with sponsors to provide similar safety wears to contract workers and self-help group women.  She promised to give them at the earliest.

Deputy Mayor V D Dharmalingam, Engineer E Devakumar, Health Officer C R Priyamvatha and Corporation councillors were present among others, on the occasion.
