They say art imitates life. Films are based on real life situations, real instances. But is it okay to lift incidents and situation and make mere caricatures in films?
Vashu Bhagnani's latest film 'Youngistaan' rides on the election wave and delivers a film which may have a good message but only on the surface. Starring Jackky Bhagnani, Farooque Sheikh and Neha Sharma in the lead, the film unabashedly lifts real life incidents and mashes them up into a weak storyline. While promoting the film, Jackky Bhagnani had insisted that he isn't playing Rahul Gandhi in the film but on the contrary the actor's character bears strong resemblance to the politician.
There are spoilers in the story. In case you haven't watched the film yet, please come back to the article later.
Here are the 10 obvious copies that leave you guffawing.
Jackky Bhagnani plays Abhimanyu Kaul who is a game developer and lives in Tokyo who is forced to join politics after his father, played by Boman Irani, the PM of the country, passes away. Kauls are Kashmiri and we all aware the Nehru-Gandhi family's roots.
The political parties are very tactfully called ABKP and UDA. Just re-arrange the letters, add a few here there, you get the names of the real parties.
A senior party member is made the President of the country. Played by Bengali actor Dipankar Dey, the character is a veteran Bengali politician in the film and is honoured with a ceremonial title to keep him in good humour.
Just like our finance minister, the filmy finance minister is from south. Wears a veshti and shirt throughout the film and is made the Deputy PM during the course of the film.
The defence minister, harbouring aspiration to become the next PM, is finely pushed into the sidelines months before the elections due to his involvement in fighter jet case scam. Rings a bell?
Jackky Bhagnani, the reluctant PM, who has 'inherited' politics from his father's family emphasizes on the power of the youth much like our Rahul Gandhi. That's a different issue altogether that in spite of harping on youth empowerment, Abhimamyu Kaul doesn't really do anything extra to impress the youth. He just admits to his live in relationship in public and viola! Wins the confidence of the 'Youngistaan'.
During campaigning, the PM aspirant is seen going to Harijan bastis and sharing a meal with a Dalit family. Just like our Rahul baba.
Abhimanyu Kaul also gives an 'exclusive' interview to an hard nose news journalist called Parnab who keeps screaming "the nation wants to know!" at regular intervals. Aah well.
Since he is a cool, young 28 year old PM, he wears his heart on his sleeve literally. Like Saif Ali Khan and Beckham, Abhimanyu also tattoos his girlfriend's name on his right arm.
