A six-member committee has been formed by the government to look into the various issues related to the queer community. This comes months after the Supreme Court refused to legally recognise same-sex marriages and referred the legislation on the matter to the Parliament.
As per the government order, the apex court’s judgement from October 17, 2023, directed the Centre to form a committee chaired by the Cabinet Secretary in order to examine the various issues relating to queer community.
The Cabinet secretary will be heading the committee as the chairperson and it will also include -Secretary, Department of Home; Secretary, Ministry of Women and Child Development; Secretary, Department of Health and Family Welfare; Secretary, Legislative Department; as well as Secretary, Department of Social Justice and Empowerment.
According to an India Today report, the panel will examine measures that can be undertaken in order to ensure that there is no discrimination against the people of the LGBTQ+ community in terms of their access to goods and services. The team will also take a look at the measures that can be taken to ensure that the LGBTQ+ community are not at the face of receiving any threat of violence, harassment or coercion.
Infact, the measures that can be taken in order to ensure that queer persons are not subjected to undergo any forced medical treatments and surgeries as well as measures that can be taken to ensure no discrimination in their access to social welfare entitlements will also be scanned by the panel.
