CHENNAI : The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) recorded the second highest per day collection for this year on Monday, thanks to the fuel crisis. That the acute shortage of petro products made a sizable chunk of car and bike users throng the buses was evident from the spike in collection. The State owned Transport Corporation earned income of Rs 299.86 lakh (around Rs 3 crore) on May 28. A week earlier (May 21) the collection stood at Rs 280.06 lakh. MTC’s collection crossed the three-crore mark (Rs 3.03 crore) on Kannum Pongal day. That is the highest per day collection this year. Monday’s collection came close to the three-crore mark, making it the second highest collection this year. According to the MTC website, the average per day collection is estimated at Rs 289.24 lakh. About two lakh commuters, above the average passengers-per-day count of 52.5 lakh, travelled on MTC buses on Monday. Attributing the jump to the prevailing inadequate supply of petrol and diesel, a senior official with MTC underscored that the Corporation was prepared to operate additional services if the demand escalated in the coming days. “As of now, we ply 3,222 buses every day. In the event of more people opting for our fleet, about 200 spare buses will be added to accommodate the extra rush,” the official said.MTC services are operated on 729 routes, connecting different pockets of Chennai with adjoining Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur districts. Electric multiple units (EMU) also reportedly experienced extra patronage.
