Mumbai: Fight Breaks Out At Residential Society Meeting, Chairman Bites Off Flat Owner's Thumb
Police said during the meeting, the flat owner and the society chairperson got into an argument that escalated into a fight in which the accused injured the victim by biting off his left thumb

The chairperson of a residential society in Mumbai’s Dahisar allegedly bit off a flat owner’s thumb during a scuffle. The 67-year-old man was booked and detained while the police are investigating the matter.

The 47-year-old victim — identified as Aditya Desai — was rushed to DR Babasaheb Ambedkar hospital after he collapsed due to profuse bleeding. After his wound was treated, he lodged a complaint at the MHB police station following which an FIR was filed.

According to police, the incident took place at Amarnath Apartment in Dahisar West’s Mhatre Wadi. Society chairperson Nityanand Padiyal held a meeting with a number of members on the morning of August 4, police said. During the meeting, Desai and Padiyal got into an argument that escalated into a fight in which the accused injured the victim by biting off his left thumb, they said.

Police are recording the statement of other members to know the sequence of events. Desai alleged that Padiyal spoke to him harshly, to which he responded. During the fight, his thumb went into Padiyal’s mouth and he bit if off completely, he said.

Desai further said Padiyal has been the chairperson of the society for 20 years. “In the meeting I gave an application to the chairman when he was rude and pushed me. I fell down when he sat on my chest and broke my spectacles. During a bid to save myself, my thumb slipped into his mouth, when he bit it off,” he told The Indian Express.

Police further said Desai has rented out his flat and his tenant comes home from work late in the night. Padiyal has instructed the guards to close the gates, causing the tenant much harassment, they said.

Deputy police commissioner Anand Bhoite told Hindustan Times that Desai has earlier written to Padiyal about the matter. On Sunday, he visited the society to speak to him but the argument turned into a fight, he said.

“We have registered a case against Padiyal based on the statement given by Desai. The FIR has been registered under section 117 (2) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita,” Bhoite was quoted as saying.
