TIRUVANNAMALAI: The district administration launched a programme to streamline commercial establishments and demolish illegal constructions along the 14-kilometre long Girivalam path in the temple town. The administration, which conducted a survey and numbered a total of 149 shops including 138 permanent shops, 10 temporary shops and one semi permanent shop along the path, also aims at creating a shop-free zone there. “Around 1,500 makeshift shops and push-cart shops appear on every full moon day, when around 5 lakh devotees visit the temple town,” District Collector Anshul Mishra told Express. “We conducted the study in a bid to regulate shops found along the Girivalam path. The shops will be given specific areas in the path to ensure free movement of devotees. We will issue notice to them well in advance and shift them to alternative sites before Chithirai Pournami,” added Mishra. The identified illegal buildings, including houses, hotels and other commercial establishments on government porompokku land along the Girivalam path, will be demolished. The Collector said action would be taken against illegal parking lots and illegal auctions of government porompokku lands for commercial activities. The administration of the five panchayats including Adi Annamalai, Venkigal, Athianthal, Kosalai and Aanaipiranthan will be entrusted to collect a nominal fee from the shops erected on non-objection lands along the Girivalam path.
