Mumbai: Trustees of Sai Baba temple at Shirdi on Friday postponed their plan to install a Rs 22-crore gold throne for the idol of the saint apparently due to widespread criticism.
Chairman of the Sai Baba Trust and MLA, Jayant Sasane, said a meeting of trustees held on Friday decided to stall their plan to replace the present silver throne with a 325-kg gold throne.
"There are two distinct opinions on the issue (one in favour of the decision and one against it). After what has appeared in the media, the trustees decided that this pious place should not be a centre of controversy," Sasane said from Shirdi at the end of the trustees' meeting.
He said the decision has been stalled for the moment. He, however, refused to elaborate whether the trustees have decided to entirely scrap it.
The Sai Baba Trust in Shirdi had decided earlier this month to replace the present silver throne of Sai Baba idol with a Rs 22-crore gold throne.
The trustees claimed that a devotee has offered to share a major portion of the financial burden. However, the decision came under fire with Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray criticising the move in the Sena mouthpiece Saamna.
