BHUBANESWAR: The NCP and the Left, electoral allies of the BJD, would not have any truck with the latter for the ensuing panchayat polls. They have decided to field candidates on their own taking into consideration the local factors. The CPI decided in its State Council meeting here on Friday that there will no adjustment with any party, including the BJD, for the panchayat polls. However, adjustments can be worked out at the local level with democratic parties taking the ground situation into consideration. Ties between the CPI and the BJD worsened after the violence at the Posco site during the month in which a person was killed. Subsequent arrest of party leader Narayan Reddy deteriorated the fragile relations. The State Council has delegated power to the district and regional committees to go for seat adjustment on these basis, State secretary of the CPI Dibakar Nayak said. The party will fight the panchayat poll with the slogan of ‘corruption-free and more transparent panchayati raj system’ in the State. Besides, it will campaign for strengthening the elected panchayati raj institutions, he said.Alleging that the block offices have now become dens of corruption, Nayak said discontentment is brewing among the people as money meant for welfare programmes is being siphoned off. Secretary of State unit of CPM Janardan Pati also ruled out any seat adjustment with the BJD. “There will be no adjustment with the BJD,” he said and added the CPM will make alliance with other Left parties at the local level. There will be no seat adjustment between the NCP and the BJD either. The party will have understanding at the local level, leader of the NCP Legislature Party Amar Prasad Satpathy said. The number of seats, to be contested by the party, will be decided at the meeting of State office-bearers to be convened soon, he said.
