Lucknow: Police in Uttar Pradesh have done it again. Days after brutally beating an eight-year-old Dalit girl on suspicion of theft, police detained and mercilessly beat a 12-year-old boy for allegedly stealing Rs 10.
A probe into the incident has been ordered. Policemen in Mahoba town of Uttar Pradesh Friday night beat Bhogan Yadav for allegedly picking up a Rs.10 note belonging to an elderly woman bus passenger. Yadav, who was travelling in a bus, was handed over to the police.
The boy was beaten even more severely when he tried to escape from the police station.
"I have ordered a probe into the incident and suspended a constable," R.P. Singh, police chief of Mahoba district, about 200 km from the state capital in Lucknow said.
He said the boy was sent home on Friday.
Singh could not ascertain whether the Rs.10 note was recovered from the boy or not.
"An enquiry has been ordered as we need to know why other cops present inside the police station did not intervene in the matter," he said.
The district police chief said other cops might also face legal action for detaining the 12-year-old in the police station.
On February 3, police in Etawah district's Kailokhar village, about 300 km from here, pulled eight-year-old Komal up by her hair and twisted her ears for allegedly stealing Rs.280. The shameful incident was watched on TV channels across India.
