A public interest petition has been filed in the High Court seeking a direction to the state government to order an immediate enquiry by an independent agency on alleged lapses by the drug control administration and corruption involved in it.
The petitioner, D Ravi Kumar, chairman of All India Citizens Organisation, wanted the court to direct the drug control administration to furnish details of the validity of licences of pharmacists working at drug stores across the state to enable people to check the credentials of the drug stores before purchasing medicines and also to complain to the department in case of discrepancies.
He further wanted the court to order a thorough inquiry into drug purchases by the AP Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation (APMSIDC) and to ensure transparency to avert wastage of public funds.
The petitioner alleged that officials of the drugs control administration were permitting medical stores to run their business by allowing them three months' time to appoint pharmacists.
Besides, licences are issued to run medical stores without following the norms.
He wanted the court to direct the AP Pharmacy Council to submit a detailed report on the validity of the licences of pharmacists and to appoint pharmacy inspectors for proper regulation of drug trade.
He also wanted action against officials guilty of committing irregularities and accumulation of properties by corrupt means.
