Palestinians to open Gaza-Egypt border
After 38-year Israeli occupation, residents of Gaza Strip will be able to connect to the rest of world with the reopen of Rafah border.

Rafah (Gaza Strip): Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas will declare opening of the Rafah border on Friday, which is Gaza?s only link to the outside world that bypasses Israel.

With this reopening, more than 1.3 million residents of Gaza Strip will be able to connect to the rest of world.

After 38-year Israeli occupation, the residents of Gaza Strip are in fearful state and believe that the territory would be transformed into a 'giant prison'.

For the residents who travel abroad, Egypt is the main transit point as Israel has banned them from routing through the country except in exceptional circumstances.

Israel closed the terminal on September 7, five days before Israeli troops left the territory.

Israel has refused to sanction the reopening of border citing fears that weapons could be smuggled from Egypt into Gaza, which is a stronghold of Palestinian militant.

Earlier, Israel and the Palestinians reached a deal on Gaza border crossings after negotiations overseen by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
